The Place
Greenland is the third largest Island in the world, situated between the Arctic ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. It is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Maniitsoq is along the west coast of Greenland, and is a small town of about 2500 people. The mountains in the region are rugged, with lots of glaciated terrain ranging from simple to complex ski routes.
Ski touring in West Greenland
A Journey Through West Greenland’s Wild Beauty
Our journey takes us to the remote and spectacular west coast of Greenland, skiing north of Maniitsoq and deep into the dramatic Eternity Fjord—the second-largest fjord system in the world. Known for its towering granite peaks and glaciated landscapes, this region offers an unforgettable ski touring and ski mountaineering experience.
The only way to access these untouched slopes is by boat, making this a true expedition into the heart of Arctic wilderness. The terrain is incredibly diverse: from steep couloirs and wide glacial descents, to island traverses and skiing all the way down to the ocean’s edge. Mountain summits in the area range from 1,000 to 1,600 metres above sea level, offering plenty of vertical for adventurous lines.
Perfect Spring Conditions
Spring is the ideal time to ski in Greenland. With long daylight hours, milder temperatures, and a generally well-settled snowpack, conditions are prime for exploring a wide range of terrain. Weather and snow can be variable—from soft powder to corn snow—but thanks to the variety of aspects and slope angles, we can nearly always find excellent skiing.
Our guiding ratio is 1 guide for every 6 guests, with two experienced guides onboard. This means the group can split into smaller teams each day, allowing for tailored objectives to suit different interests and abilities.
Home on the Water
After a full day in the mountains, we’ll return to the comforts of our floating basecamp. Enjoy a refreshing drink, a hot shower, and unwind in the on-deck hot tub or sauna. When night falls, settle into your cozy cabin and rest up for the next day’s adventure.
A Glimpse of Greenlandic Life
Near the end of our trip, we’ll visit the charming village of Kangaamiut, where life revolves around fishing and community. The local children are always eager to share fishing stories and a warm welcome. It’s a rare and special chance to connect with everyday life in coastal Greenland.
Wildlife Encounters & Arctic Wonders
Keep your eyes on the water—humpback whales often feed in these fjords, surfacing beside us as they follow the krill-rich currents. Above, thousands of seabirds soar around dramatic bird cliffs, where they nest and hunt under the glow of the Arctic sun.
In the evenings, you can enjoy a peaceful paddle at sunset, gliding beneath glacier walls and nesting cliffs. Be sure to visit Greenland’s legendary “One Tree”—a solitary spruce planted in the 1930s, now a quirky and beloved landmark.
Catch Your Dinner
With our onboard fishing gear, try your hand at Arctic cod fishing right from the deck of the Terschelling. The fjords are teeming with fish—and with a little luck, your catch could become the highlight of a fresh, locally sourced dinner for the whole group.
Ski Abilities
Fitness and ski ability should be advanced with prior ski touring experience. Touring days will be of moderate duration. Terrain is moderately steep and glaciated with mixed conditions. Ski mountaineering objectives are possible under the right conditions. Most essential is an adventurous spirit with a keen desire to explore the mountains of Greenland!
